Zimbabwe's Human Rights Activists To Sue Government For $22 Million

A prominent Zimbabwean human rights activist and eight others are suing the government for US$22 million after terror charges against them were dropped because they had been beaten and tortured, their lawyer said Thursday. Harrison Nkomo, a lawyer for activist Jestina Mukoko, said the national police commissioner, intelligence minister and several police officers were among those being sued for the abduction, wrongful arrest and torture of Mukoko and the others.

South African President Set To Be A Father For The 22nd Time

Bongiwe Gloria Ngema, who recently accompanied Mr Zuma on a state visit to China, is expecting a child early next year, according to media reports citing her close friends. The pair already have one child and are due to marry in December, which will bring to four the number of South Africa's First Ladies. A report of the pregnancy comes only a fortnight after the arrival of Mr Zuma's 21st child, which was born to the second of his current wives.

Maputo Tense After Riots

Mozambique police kept a close watch over the capital Maputo on Saturday after three days of riots over food and fuel price hikes that left 10 people dead. No new cases of unrest had been reported since last night, when three police officers were injured in clashes with demonstrators, police officials said. "Three police were injured when protesters threw stones at them. When we tried to stop them some people threw stones and other objects at police," said police spokesperson Arnaldo Chefo.

A Diamond Firm Operating In Zimbabwe Is Set To Built A Diamond Polishing Factory

A diamond firm operating from Zimbabwe's Marange diamond fields has begun constructing a multi-million dollar cutting and polishing centre in the country, officials said on Tuesday. The Zimbabwe Diamond Technology Centre, which is being constructed by Canadile miners, one of the three firms operating in Marange, is set to become operational within six months.

Mozambique Food Riots - The True Face of Global Warming

It has been a summer of record temperatures – Japan had its hottest summer on record, as did South Florida and New York.
