Jefferson Thomas was fast and athletic and often played pickup basketball with white students while growing up in Little Rock in the 1950s. But when Thomas became one of nine black students to integrate Arkansas' largest high school, many of his basketball buddies weren't happy to see him in their classes. "One of them said, 'Well I don't mind playing basketball or football with you or anything. You guys are good at sports. Everybody knows that, but you're just not smart enough to sit next to me in the classroom,'" Thomas recalled years later.

US President Barack Obama promised to roll out “new ideas” to boost growth and spur hiring this week as he embarks on economy-focused trips to the Midwest with less than two months until congressional elections. Armed with what he called “positive news” on the jobs front after the Labor Department reported last week that private payrolls climbed 67,000 in August, more than forecast, the president will travel to Wisconsin and Ohio to promote his economic policies, which Republicans argue are ineffective and have added to record budget deficits. “I will be addressing a broader package of new ideas next week,” Obama said Sept. 3 at the White House. The economy is moving in “the right direction; we just have to speed it up.” The hiring by companies eased concerns that the world’s largest economy is sliding back into a recession. The Labor Department report showed overall employment fell 54,000 for a second month and the unemployment rate rose to 9.6 percent from 9.5 percent as more people looked for work.

A Bronx hospice nurse found her long lost father because he became one of her patients! A remarkable twist of fate reunited a dying cancer patient with the daughter he hadn’t seen in 41 years at the Bronx hospice where she is a nurse. Victor Peraza arrived at Calvary Hospital 10 days ago, to the only available bed – on nurse Wanda Rodriguez’ unit. The new patient bore the same name as Rodriguez’ father, who left her family when she was an infant.
